Pakistan-China Gawadar port contract and India’s concerns
2013, particularly for Balochistan, has been amazing. The decisions of removing government from Balochistan and securing Reko dik gold mining project from foreign interests were the part of the top stories. Yet again Pakistan has amazed south Asian countries by formally signing a multi-billion dollar contract for construction of Gawadar port in collaboration with China.
The contract signing ceremony was attended by President Asif Ali Zardari, Chinese Ambassador Liu Jian, Hina Rubani Khar, some federal ministers, members of parliament and senior government officials.
The decision is intended to make some economic developments in Balochistan and Pakistan ultimately. The world wide media has taken it in a very wrong way though, especially India. Gawadar port is now a big concern in India according to her media. The question they often ask is,”Is that a friendly agreement of a sinister plot?”.
Gawadar port is at the meeting point of the Arabian coast and the Persian Gulf. The port is a strategic location for trade and in a move that has raised serious concerns for India. The operations at Gwadar port have now been taken over by China. While China and Pakistan claims that this is just a friendly move to help Pakistan, many believe that this latest development could be a sign of China and Pakistan trying to build naval bases to the east of the Indian Peninsula.
India finds this act considerably constraint from the security point of view because China will be closer to India and will get access to Arabian sea. India believes any commercial Pak-China deal always has strategic interests in it. Pakistan should be least interested in Indian stories about this agreement because Pakistan has bigger issues than cooked stories from Indian media.
“China will actively support anything that is conductive to China-Pakistan friendship”, Foreign office spokesperson Hong Lei.
Pakistan and China finds this step very helpful in developing Pakistan’s economy again.
